About us

Nelson Preschool is open in term-time (click here for dates) and offers 15-hour funded places for two-year-olds, 15-hour funded places for three-year-olds and 30-hour funded places for those who are eligible. You can top up by paying for extra sessions at our hourly rate of £3.50 per hour. Children can attend from the age of two and a half years up to reception age. We have a morning session 8:30 – 13:30 (we invite children to bring a packed lunch) and an afternoon session 13:30 – 16:30, and children are welcome to stay all day. We are registered to take up to 43 children per session.

Nelson Preschool is a committee-run preschool situated within the grounds of Nelson Infant School. The preschool began operating from this building in 1974.

At Nelson Preschool we provide a wide range of stimulating and exciting activities to encourage children to develop through all areas of the EYFS, whilst linking to the Characteristics of Effective Learning. We are aware of children’s current interests and incorporate this into our play and activities to motivate the children and ensure that activities are age appropriate, meeting the individual age and stage of development. Our members of staff aim to ensure children are safe, settled and happy in the learning environment and encourage children to develop confidence and independence.

Our Setting

Nelson Preschool is a large setting; we have a large outdoor play area and three rooms named the play room, construction room and art room.

Outdoor Area Our outdoor area has a wooden sandpit, wooden pirate ship climbing apparatus including a slide, and a large area to encourage children to develop spatial awareness through chasing games. We also have an outdoor pod area where children can explore different activities and games, engaging in play with their peers. We alternate between vehicles, bicycles and moving in different ways using our bodies e.g. hoops, ball games, chasing games etc.

Art Room We offer a room especially for craft and messy play (gloop, shaving foam, playdough, soap flakes etc.) complete with a sand table and water tray. Children can explore different activities on a daily basis. A healthy snack is provided in the art room during each session. Children can have milk or water and choose from a wide selection of fruit. We take into account any allergies or special dietary requirements. Children have the opportunity to contribute to the shopping list – selecting fruits they would like for snack the following week.

Construction Room This room offers a cosy area where the children can relax on a blanket with cushions and and books and a sensory area with a fish bubble tube light. Children can choose activities and games to play too. This room contains a large selection of free choice boxes such as wooden bricks, dolls, animals, puzzles and games as well as computer and kindle.

Play Room Our large play room provides children with a huge selection of free choice boxes that enable children to make independent choices on what to play with whilst also participating in planned activities that link to their next steps in their learning stories. There is a book corner with a sofa where children can share books with each other. We also have a home corner which links to family life and will include photos of family members with the children. Children each have a special drawer in this room containing their learning story and a special pink book that can go between home and preschool which is a good talking point between staff and children.

Our Staff

Here at Nelson Preschool we have thirteen permanent members of staff including two midday supervisors and an administrator. Our two managers and deputy manager hold Level 3 qualifications and additional assistants hold either Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications, and one also has a BA Hons. Our members of staff attend regular training throughout the year to extend their knowledge further and to ensure their training is up to date. Other training courses that staff members have recently attending include Sign-along training. Communication Champion training, Visual aids and English as Additional Language training. All members of staff hold First Aid and Child Protection certificates, four members of staff have also completed Safeguarding Lead Practitioner training.

When your child starts attending our preschool they will be allocated a Key Person. The Key Person is responsible for completing your child’s learning story by adding photos and observations that link to the EYFS and then planning next steps to help enhance and develop children’s learning. Your child’s Key Person is also available to speak to with regards to any concern that you may have or to discuss any relevant information. We realise the importance of the Key Person building a relationship with the child and aim to develop strong bonds and relationships with both the child and parents.
